Server log files contain a gold mine of information for webmasters and SEOs. But accessing and processing this data can often be incredibly time-consuming.
Log Hero allows users to automatically import server log file data into Google Analytics. While clever custom dimensions allow users to sort by bot name, HTTP error codes and many more, all with the granularity of Google Analytics metrics.
Log Hero is available as a plugin. But each plugin allows you to access different amounts of log file data.
This post takes a quick look at the type of data you can access depending on the Log Hero plugin you install.
What Type of Log Hero Plugins Are Available?
To set up Log Hero, you will need to install one of the following plugins. Plugins are currently available for:
- WordPress
- PHP
- Apache
But there are some differences as to what data you are able to access.
What Data Can I Access?
WordPress does not itself log CSS, Javascript, images because these resources are loaded directly from the server. 404 HTTP errors are an exception.
This is also true for PHP. This means that the data you can access is limited to web page data excluding CSS, JS and images.
Log Hero’s Apache plugin, on the other hand, does allow to access the full array of server log file data including CSS, javascript, and images. It does take a little more technical know-how to install and it does require full server access. Unfortunately, most web hosting solutions do not allow full server access. Please check with your web hosting service provider if you are unsure if you have full server access or not.
